A short time after that Kelli had the chance to meet Kirk’s parents (and brother Steven) at the Crystal Inn. Steve was playing in a band thing at SUU so they were down supporting him.
Kirk had come up with an idea to pray and read the scriptures together every night. In our prayers we were supposed to pray if we should continue to date (if it was going anywhere) or if we should just be friends.
Kelli knew her answer was “yes” when they talked about it and she wasn’t worried about all the fun she was going to miss, or if it was too fast. It was a really comforting feeling knowing that she had found her eternal companion. She felt at peace.
Kirk knew his answer to getting married was yes while out hunting in Wayne County. His brother Scott had asked if he had asked in prayer about marrying Kelli. He had told him that "kind of". He said "you are 'kind of' going to get an answer". Kirk asked more directly that night. The next day while making a push through trees, he found my answer to my prayers.
Kirk and Kelli talked about this one night in Kelli’s car out in the parking lot at Eccles. They discussed how they both felt really good about the decision to get married. They were so excited and it became real when Kirk said, “Kelli you are going to be my wife.”
When Kelli told her mom and dad that she was thinking about getting married, they literally just stood there. Her dad later said, “Sorry I didn’t do a little jig. My body doesn’t do that anymore.” Kelli’s family knew that she was in love when she didn’t even care about Kirk’s “snoopy” shoes.
Buying the ring was a tricky task as Kirk did this under the radar. We had never even been ring shopping. Kelli and I actually were in Richfield for the weekend. Stetson was going to be blessed in Ferron so we made the stay in Richfield. Also, there was a funeral in Loa that Kirk went to while Kelli slept in and then went to spend time with Grandma Gerri. Before the funeral, Kirk went to the jewelry store in Richfield to look at rings. Kirk’s Mom went with to help pick rings. We had narrowed it down to two rings and then took off to Loa for the funeral. Kirk had the two rings with me and on the way back decided on the one that Kelli now has on her finger. In Ferron for the blessing, Kirk showed most of his family the ring. Kelli was there, but had no idea. none at all :D
Kelli's mom and dad had actually driven through town a week or so prior to this and I met them at Wendy's and asked for their daughters hand in marriage, in Chinese as is a family tradition. Kelli's mom Linda was so surprised. Her mouth dropped open wide when I said that Kelli and I wanted to be married before the next semester started.
Kelli thought that Kirk was meeting with her parents a week after they actually did and is still to this day very impressed with her mother and how well she kept the secret. She even played along with Kelli’s evil plot to record Kirk when he asked… To bad the idea came 4 days too late.
Kirk believes the execution of the proposal was done very very well. To this day, it is one of the most talked of "locations" for proposal on campus tours. Kirk proposed to Kelli on November 11, 2005 near the waterfall on SUUs upper campus. It took a lot of planning and help from family and friends. Kirk’s Mom helped get a jewelry box that said "Kelli will you Marry Me" on it, Kyler helped film the proposal, and Kirk asked. It was on a Distinguished Scholar Day and it was cold. It was raining on and off. Larry, Janae and Steven were there for DSD, but were unable to witness the actual proposal. Kelli and Kirk had a break from helping out with DSD and had planned on using this time for “Kelirk” time. Kelli had actually been in an interview or meeting for school and I waited "in" patiently for her to get out. She was tired when she was done and I asked "what would you like to do?" She replied, "Go sit down and rest". My answer was an insistent "let's go for a walk". We walked in the cold to the upper part of campus. Kyler had been waiting there for more than 45 minutes in the rain because Kelli's meeting took too long. Poor guy was freezing. He was able to film the proposal and we are grateful for that. Kyler had placed the jewelry box near the bench for Kelli to find it. We sat down and the tours for DSD were going. People were everywhere. We remember people walking by and say things about proposing. Kirk was shocked, but Kelli still had no idea. Kirk told Kelli that he had a gift for her hiding. She looked around and couldn't find it. She looked again and saw the box & read the writing. Her exact words were "Shut Up" when she saw the writing on the box. Kirk told her to pick it up. She reached over to grab it and Kirk bent down on one knee and grabbed the ring out of his pocket. He asked her if she would Marry him. He had to ask twice before she answered because she was in shock. At this point, the tour guides (most of our friends) started realizing what was really happening. Abby Beck (now McEwen) realized what had just happened and was ecstatic. They were yelling and asking in disbelief, “did you just propose?”
We had dinner that night with DSD and were on top of the world. Kelli's family was driving through and we were able to show them the ring. Her sisters even spent the night.
We don't remember much after the proposal. We just survived the semester and enjoyed our getting to know you better time. December 30th couldn't come any quicker. Looking back though, it went pretty quick. 6 weeks was not a long time for planning, but we are glad we did not wait long. Kelli and her mom did most of the planning for the wedding to which Kirk is grateful. We made it through with only one "minor argument" the night before the wedding, everything went very very well!
We were sealed at last for time and all eternity in the Manti Temple on December 30, 2005.
We met the very end of August (for real), Started dating September 18, We were engaged November 11 and Married December 30. It all happened really quick but we wouldn’t change a thing.
Here is a quick video of Ky
